Thank you for writing this article and for helping to analyze the parallels and commonalities between transgender and asexual identities. I’ve read that similarly to the “compulsory heterosexuality” that many queer identities subvert, asexuality subverts “compulsory sexuality” — the notion that everyone at some level must experience sexual attraction and must fulfill hegemonic sexual expectations in various contexts like marriage, etc.
Unclear exactly why simply being the author of the “Harry Potter” series wasn’t enough for J.K. Rowling; apparently she felt compelled to further make a name for herself as a notorious TERF and acephobe as well. Totally disgraceful.
Yes, compulsory sexuality is an incredibly useful term and absolutely appropriate for describing JKR’s hissy fit. Maybe I’ll have to write a post just about compulsory sexuality soon.
Thank you, Canton. I was...let's just say "annoyed" at JKR's little hissy fit on our day, and your essay here, especially that great clincher at the end, has cheered me up no end!
The word "assigned" when talking about gender and sexuality is essential. Someone decided when each of us was born what we were long before we could understand or articulate who and what we are for ourselves.
Taking issue with ace people is so weird. Even if you’re ideologically entirely committed to hating people who don’t conform to sexual norms,,,,, the “nah I’m good” folks?!?! Really?!?! What victim can you fabricate here??? What pretext could you possibly manufacture??
I simply don’t understand why anyone is upset with asexuals. It’s not like they’re fucking with anyone, unlike the fascist loudmouths infecting every form of public discourse today. Why can’t JK just leave them alone?
To be fair to her when anyone gets attack they usually don't simply roll over and give up their belly. It is a pretty natural instinct to dig in and defend one's beliefs.
This looks like a fine article, but to be honest I had to stop reading because I said to myself, I no longer give a sh-t what this twisted -sshole thinks. I resolve never to read another thing about what she, he, it or whatever Rowling is calling herself these days thinks about gender or anything else.

Yes! I would gladly read your post if you decide to do so 🙂 This is the book from which I first learned the term “compulsory sexuality”, written by an ace Black woman, Sherronda J. Brown, who is an essayist and editor (would highly recommend her book!!): https://rep.club/products/refusing-comp-sexuality?srsltid=AfmBOoqXB75YT-EDj-TRcDER2Rvgn5-YfJ3JBOVhDwkC1GqF5VGrWQP6

I, for one, support her free speech rights and her determination to remind everyone that she's a piece of shit
This article is perfect. Well done.
"if she spent less time on twitter and more time in the library" the way I find myself saying this twice a fucking day

Oh, well done, in high style!

She’s truly lost the plot.

She needs to log off and find a hobby.
Who ever oppressed asexuals?

I didn’t say they don’t exist or aren’t queer I said they’re not oppressed.
Why are phds unwilling to look at the harms of porn by the way? It’s baffling.
Tell me you don’t understand how to use Google without telling me you don’t understand how to use Google.
Except it’s not baffling. They get such a kick out of the transgression of patriarchal norms they’re unwilling to look at the obvious drawbacks of it.
Boy she’s really digging in huh

Imagine having the time, energy or inclination to get mad at and attack asexuals? JoJo has completely lost the plot.
I want everyone to remember what she said about Autistic people - given that they are far more likely to be gender non-conforming across the board.
There's something very very wrong with her.
Where will she stop!!!!!!!
